چکیده

Biliarycutaneous fistula (BCF) is a rare complication of blunt abdominal trauma. Although, many techniques have been developed so far, management of BCF still remains an extremely challenging procedure. Management of biliarycutaneous fistula requires a complex approach and collaboration of varying medical specialists. Poor general condition of the patient complicated with sepsis, past history of many laparotomies resulting in extensive abdominal wall defects contribute to an increased mortality rate. We present a case of bile duct injury complicated with bilecutaneous fistula following blunt abdominal trauma treated with Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). Due to the lack of potential and effective surgical methods of management, persisting bile leakage and the presence of high output enterocutaneous fistulas, NPWT is considered a method of choice.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy versus modified Barker Vacuum Pack as temporary abdominal closure technique for Open Abdomen management: a four-year experience

BACKGROUND We reviewed our experience with patients presenting with trauma and peritonitis who underwent an open abdomen (OA) procedure, and compared outcomes between Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and a modified Barker Vacuum Pack (mBVP) technique. METHODS In this descriptive study, we retrospectively analyzed data regarding all patients who underwent OA for intra-abdominal sepsis or...

Negative pressure wound therapy aids recovery following surgical debridement due to severe bacterial cellulitis with abdominal abscess post-cesarean

INTRODUCTION Bacterial cellulitis post-Cesarean section is rare. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is widely used in various medical specialities; its effectiveness in obstetrics however remains the topic of debate-used predominantly as an adjunct to secondary intention specific to high-risk patient groups. Its application in the treatment of actively infected wounds post-Cesarean is not w...

Negative pressure wound therapy management of the “open abdomen” following trauma: a prospective study and systematic review

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION The use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) for temporary abdominal closure of open abdomen (OA) wounds is widely accepted. Published outcomes vary according to the specific nature and the aetiology that resulted in an OA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new NPWT system specifically used OA resulting from abdominal trauma. METHODS ...

Matching Biological Mesh and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy in Reconstructing an Open Abdomen Defect

Reconstruction of open abdominal defects is a clinical problem which general and plastic surgeons have to address in cooperation. We report the case of a 66-year-old man who presented an abdominal dehiscence after multiple laparotomies for a sigmoid-rectal adenocarcinoma that infiltrated into the abdominal wall, subsequently complicated by peritonitis and enteric fistula. A cutaneous dehiscence...
